Prescribing Policy
At Alpine Psychiatry, we take a thoughtful, consistent approach to prescribing controlled substances. These policies apply to all patients and are designed to keep your care safe and consistent with best practices. If you have questions about how any of this applies to your care, your provider is happy to talk it through with you.
Benzodiazepine policy
To prioritize your safety, we do not prescribe benzodiazepines or certain sleep aids. If you're currently taking one of these medications, your primary care provider will need to continue that prescription.
Stimulants for ADHD and other controlled substances
As part of confirming an ADHD diagnosis, we ask to speak with a family member or close confidant before prescribing stimulant medication. If medication is lost or stolen, we're not able to provide an early refill unless a police report documents the theft, and this exception can only be made once. Monthly follow-up appointments are part of our ongoing approach to care for anyone prescribed a controlled substance.
Refills and medication changes
Medication needs, including refills or changes, are discussed during your scheduled appointment rather than between visits. Controlled substances require a monthly check-in as part of this process.
Addiction treatment
We're here to support your overall mental health care, but we do not prescribe medication for substance use disorders, such as suboxone for opiate use disorder or benzodiazepines for alcohol withdrawal.

Once you're an established patient, you'll receive a detailed consent form that covers these policies in more depth.
These policies apply to every patient and aren't something we're able to adjust on a case-by-case basis. If any of them don't align with what you're looking for in care, we understand, and hope you're able to find a provider whose approach is the right fit for you.
