Abilify (aripiprazole) is an atypical antipsychotic used to support mental wellness across a range of conditions. Its unique mechanism helps stabilize mood and behavior by balancing dopamine and serotonin—two key brain chemicals involved in emotional regulation.
Unlike many antipsychotic medications, Abilify doesn't simply block neurotransmitters. Instead, it acts as a partial agonist, adjusting brain signaling up or down as needed. This nuanced action is why it's often referred to as a "Goldilocks drug"—not too much, not too little, but just right for many patients.
Abilify is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat:
Schizophrenia (adults and adolescents)
Bipolar I disorder – manic or mixed episodes
Bipolar maintenance treatment
Adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD)
Agitation associated with autism spectrum disorder
Tourette’s disorder
Acute agitation in schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (injectable formulation)
Research also supports Abilify’s use in conditions beyond FDA-approved labels, including:
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Bipolar depression
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
As-needed use for anxiety or irritability
Adolescent depression (adjunctive)
